I've run into probems in the past with intermittant errors failing backups on
san drives with 3.4 as well.
What type of drives are in your library and are they fiber attached to the
san? How many servers need access to the library.
I ask because most of the problems I had related to 2 things: bad fiber and
the firmware revision on the SDLT drives of these installations that I've
seen having problems. After I had the fiber tested and replaced and updated
the firmware on the drives all problems stopped. I also zoned the fiber
switch so that only the master and media servers could see the tape drives on
the fiber.
I know this isn't really related completely to your question but in the past
I had a lot of problems with drives going down and this resolved my problems.

I have a dire situation here where backups to a SAN-attached tape
library are failing intermittantly. This is not the first time this problem
has occurred, and in the past it's been because other servers have
interfered with the hardware, and I've been able to get by it by
disabling the tape drive and media changer devices on all those
servers except my master/media server.
However, that isn't working this time. Ideally, I'd like to properly
zone the library to make it invisible to everything but the master/media
server, but that solution is prohibitively expensive and will not happen.
So I'm looking into SCSI reserve/release as described on pages 11-18
of patch 341_3A release notes. I can find very little general information
about this online, and I hope someone here can fill me in.
Does Windows 2000 support this? And if so, how is it "set up properly"?
What are passthru drivers and how do I determine if they have access
to all shared drives?
With the exception of two servers, none of the servers that can see the
tape library has NetBackup installed. Does that make a difference?
Does the ENABLE_SCSI_RESERVE file only have to exist on the
master/media server or all servers?
