I cannot recall because the problem has now gone.
But if you are in doubt, why don't you connect to the client and check that
the Master Server is listed to perform the backups.

Thanks for reply,

I had a look at the bpcd file on the client shortly after running the backup
and the third line down where it should show the ip address of the client it
shows 0,0,0,0 - from Ip address 10.210.5.55.626 is the virtual master server
ip and port number sending the request. Were you getting anything similar to
this

bpcd log from failed client just after initiating a manual backup ....

16:55:06.187 [138.232] <2> bpcd main: offset to GMT 0
16:55:06.187 [138.232] <2> bpcd main: Got socket for input 224
16:55:06.187 [138.232] <2> logconnections: BPCD ACCEPT FROM 10.210.5.55.626
TO 0.0.0.0.13782
16:55:06.187 [138.232] <2> bpcd main: setup_sockopts complete
16:55:06.203 [138.232] <2> bpcd main: no authentication required
16:55:06.203 [138.232] <2> bpcd peer_hostname: Connection from host 'master
server name' (10.210.5.55) port 626
16:55:06.203 [138.232] <2> bpcd valid_server: comparing 'master server name'
and 'master server name'
16:55:06.203 [138.232] <4> bpcd valid_server: hostname comparison succeeded

Imran
We had the same problem here! When we rebooted the 2 NT Servers the backups
were fine!
I would run a Performance Monitor to see if its low on Memory or the
Pagefile is too small!!

NT is quite strange in this department!

Hi,

we have w2k (sp2) with 2 NT4 servers operating as PDC & BDC - using
NetBackup 4.5 with mp2

The master server is clustered in Microsoft Active Passive mode, all servers
have dual network cards - with one connection to the dedicated backup LAN
and one to a public LAN

All is working fine except the PDC and BDC backups fail with error 58 -
-can't connect to client

I've checked with VERITAS support that all the settings such as host file,
required_network_interface are correct but still this fails.

The interested think is that if the NT4 clients are rebooted are can back
them up but a day or two later they will fail again until rebooted again

any help would be appreciated
