I stand corrected 3.44GB. But no the disk nor data is compressed. I was
under the assumption that if you have a sector size of 512k and have a file
size of 200k the 312k is wasted because you can only have one file on a
sector. But if you reduce the sector size to 256k then only 56k is lost.
Am I wrong? Please correct.

Thanks,

First off, I assume you mean: 3.44GB (three-point-four-four) with a
size-on-disk of 1.38G.

Sector size issues would yield a larger size-on-disk, not smaller. This
looks like your catalog is in a compressed drive, meaning it's 3.44G of data
squished into a 1.38G of space.

This should slow your catalog performance but otherwise, as far as I know,
be acceptable.

OK here we go.
Size:344 GB
Size on disk:1.38 GB
If I read this right there is only 1.38GB of data the rest is wasted.
I think this is because of the number of small files combined with the
sector size on the disk.
If I could reduce the sector size I could recover as much as 2GB of space!!!
Are you folks in agreement with that and if so can I reduce the sector size
without reinstalling the whole system?

Nope - it's a unix command.

What you need is the total size of your .../netbackup/db/images directory &
its contents. Is there a windows command for that?

I'm on windows not unix. I don't see a du.exe. Is it called something
else?

So how big can a catalog get? And what happens if you don't have retention
levels i.e. if you never overwrite data?

No

The catalog contains your backup image information. Purging the catalog by
deleting files will cause database corruption. The only way to shrink your
catalog is to utilize catalog compression or change your backup policies to
a lower retention level. Daily, the catalog is purged via NBU to remove
expired backup image information.

Should the catalog be purged? It is taking up alot of space on the disk.
