A note of advice for those using SDLT320 drives - check your st.conf =
settings .  =20
=20
I recently upgraded my tape environment from DLT8000 to SDLT320 drives. =
 I was given the following settings, by Veritas support and assured =
repeatedly that these were the proper settings for SDLT320 drives.
=20
    SDLT-data  =3D    1,0x38,0,0x19639,4,0x90,0x91,0x90,0x91,3;
=20
We did some data integrity testing and all looked good. The initial =
performance looked OK, not stellar but OK. I assumed the lackluster =
performance indicated buffer tuning was required.
=20
3 weeks in, I did some initial review of tape usage to double check our =
cartridge forecasts. I saw an increase of 2.75x instead of the =
expected 4x compared to the DLT8000s. Some digging on the Quantum web =
site yielded the SCSI Interface Guide for the SDLT drives. Turns out =
0x90 and 0x91 put the drive into SDLT220 mode. This document indicated =
the proper modes for the drives were 0x92 and 0x93. I manually loaded =
a labelled tape and confirmed using the front panel LEDs on the drive =
that my tapes were indeed formatted in SDLT220 format.
=20
I made the following st.conf change and observed that relabelling a tape =
did indeed put it in SDLT320 format...
=20
    SDLT-data  =3D    1,0x38,0,0x19639,4,0x90,0x91,0x92,0x93,3;
=20
My data per cartridge numbers were much better this weekend =
(>200GB/cart) and the performance was better as well.
Veritas confirmed yesterday that 0x92 and 0x93 are in fact the proper =
Mode selectors for these drives.
