This statement is more correct than the statement from someone earlier
saying that it has to be on the master. It is usually just assumed, and
is the recommended best practice, to have only one Volume Database Host
within a NetBackup domain and that it is also the master server for that
domain (not to be confused with DNS domains or NT Domains).
It needs to be on EACH master/media server THAT IS A VOLUME DATABASE HOST
in order to be used as a Scratch Pool for media managed by that Volume
Database Host.
Sorry Curtis, but I think Backup Central needs to update their FAQ on this
one!
... and the FAQ also states "Netbackup will setup a Netbackup pool that is used
for database (indexes)
backups. It will also setup a None pool which is available to any user or
application for backups."
The NetBackup pool is the default for all new classes/policies. It is NOT
just used for database backups. Also, the None pool is not available to
any user or application for backups as the FAQ states. Try choosing this
in your policy. It doesn't show up as an option, at least it doesn't in
the 4.5 environments I'm looking at now... and I don't remember seeing it
show up as an option for a Class in 3.4 or 3.2 either.

It doesn't hurt to have it in media servers vm.conf, but it *does* works
fine without it.
I have checked it many times.
The SCRATCH pool must be defined on a volume database host.

No, that's not true! SCRATCH_POOL *does* need to be defined in the vm.conf

See:

..and check out your Media Manager Guide.
