About 100 GB.

8 hours available, currently backing up 65 GB in under 3 hours.

Unsure.

No, this will be CIFS only.

Unsure, likely fully loaded. There is minimal activity during the backup
window.

The Windows backup server will be dedicated to backups during the backup
window and can therefore be quite loaded. It is a Compaq Proliant DL580,
dual PIII Zeon 700, 1 GB RAM, NC7131 GigE NIC, Compaq External SDLT.

Already spent. :) I elected not to go with NDMP for now for two reasons.
Firstly, the NetApp tech claimed that backing up over GigE would be fine,
and feed the backup server / SDLT drive fast enough. Second, using NDMP
would restrict us to requiring NetApp hardware in a DR scenario. I like
the idea of being able to restore to a generic Windows file server which
would be more quickly available.
FWIW, I purchased a second NIC for the NetApp, and a second GigE NIC for
the backup server, as well as an HP Procurve Gigabit switch (J4902A).
This is for a 'backup network' segment, and I have been told this will be
fast enough by a NetApp tech. I hope that claim is true.
Thanks,
Ron.
