We recently converted from DLT7000 to SDLT drives.
I found it kind of strange that Netbackup would not mount the media once
it was changed to dlt3 but you could mount it manually.
When data from one of the DLTIV tapes is requested, here is the process I
use to mount the tape for a restore.
- Freeze media so the media will not be written too, once the media type
is changed.
bpmedia -freeze -ev <media id>
- Add the media to your robot using vmupdate, if you have one...
vmupdate -rn 0 -rt tld -empty_ie
- Using vmquery verify that the media type is still at DLT
vmquery -m <media id>
- Change the media type from dlt to dlt3 so it will mount in the SuperDLT
tape drives
vmchange -new_mt dlt3 -m <media id>
- Verify the media type change and remember the volume pool for the mount
command below, not really necessary but it is nice to see if the change
worked.
vmquery -m <media id>
- Move to the tpreq directory and use tpreq to manually mount the tape.
Usage: tpreq -ev evsn [-rv rvsn] [-a (r/w)] [-d density] [-p
poolname] [-f] filename
Once the tape is mounted it will unmount automatically once the restore
has been completed.
tpreq -ev <media id> -a r -d dlt3 -p <volume pool> -f <media id>

Subject: [Veritas-bu] DLT4 import via SDLT drive??
Greetings,
We're having a bit of a problem importing tapes into our new backup
environment. We're using NB 4.5 on Solaris 2.8 with an Overland LXN2000
changer with two SDLT drives. In netbackup the drives are defined as being
dlt3, as well as all of our sdlt media.
Our old backup server was running NB 3.4 with a dlt7000 drive, using dlt4
tapes. We now need to import some of these tapes into our new catalog.
I've
been following a few different threads, and know that NB won't load a dlt
tape into a dlt3 drive.
So what are our options? If the media is labeled as dlt3, should it work
in
the drive? (it hasn't thus far) I was thinking that the drive may be
confused, expecting sdlt media when the tape is labeled as dlt3. But I've
read that these are purely organizational labels, so maybe this shouldn't
matter?
Thanks for any help,
Reece
