Yes you are right but the problem here is that i have about 200 clients
many of them running 3.4. For vnetd to work i need 4.5 on both the
server and the clients.

You have to change the configuration for each client, but you do that
on the master (and it's scriptable if you have a large number of
clients). 

Please see "Using vnetd to Enhance Firewall Protection" in the
"Managing NetBackup" section of the 4.5 Sys Admin Guide.
