What type of tape drives are you using?  Perhaps the behaviour is particular to 
the LTO drives we have.

We're running 5.2.11.2 on W2K DC with SSO and not having any problems.
According to the Emulex site http://www.emulex.com/ts/docfc/frame8k.htm,
5.4.82a4 is current.

I have had simlar problems on an AIX with a IBM FC 6228 (EOM of Emulex), 

in our case it was because the HBA wsa using SCSI-3 and our  tape drive
SCSI.

Try look in the event log for unable to SCSI unload.
