This brings up a topic that we have been looking into lately. We have had
great results when using IDR to recover MS systems on the same hardware,
however when trying to recover to different hardware has been painful.
Typically we would need to rebuild the OS, re-install all applications (to
capture the registry settings), then restore any data from backups (SQL db,
config files, etc.). This would be especially unbearable if one of our
terminal servers that has 50 + applications running on it went belly-up.
Is there anything out there that would make recovering a system to non-like
hardware less of a head ache? Or are we stuck with this method until M$
changes the way the system state/registry is handled?
Any input is greatly appreciated.

We run a very mixed shop (MS,SCO,LINUX,AIX) on a W2K master/media setup with
an STK L700 and 9840 drives. To date I have completely recovered every
imaginable type of MS server, whether they be NT4, W2K, member server or
Domain Controller. The member servers are especially easy if you use IDR.
Domain Controllers are really just as easy since SP2 and NBU 3.4.1 and all
the patches. I have had excellent results backing up our exchange 5.5
server. I can't help you with the SQL part since our DBA's perfer a
different approach than an agent based backup.

There is a need to standardize on backup software at our remote sites. Most
are smaller shops with W2K file/print, MS Exchange 5.5 and MS SQL Server
2000. I've run a Legato on Solaris environment for years which has been
very good with UNIX, good with MS data files and poor with disaster recovery
on NT systems.
To date, I don't believe we have ever completely recovered an NT 4.0 or W2K
server that completely failed but have been able to recover all data once
the system was completely rebuilt manually. This is even after working with
Legato tech support to verify our procedures.
I'm very interested in actual satisfaction with Veritas products in an all
MS shop. There is a very strong interest in BMR on our critical Solaris and
W2K servers so I'd also appreciate some feedback if you are using this
product.
