/usr/openv/volmgr/bin/vmoprcmd shows a nice summary of the drive status.

Subject: [Veritas-bu] Storage Device Status

Does anyone know what the "command-line" command is to get the status of a
tape
drive (up or down)
Our DLT7000 drives get "downed" frequently and I would like to setup a cron
job
that can get the status
of the drives and email our operators.

     Thanks

Dennis Dlask
