We had the same problem and found following workaround:

- create a new class, just for the db-backup.

- in the bpstart/end_notify script check what class is running and on this 
decide if to stop/restart the db. IIRC the class is provided via a 
commandline parameter which will be available in the script (if its a shell 
script, they are $1, $2, ...)
