The mediaDB is part of the catalogDB. When speaking of the NBU Catalog DB
you are referencing all of the dbs

/usr/openv/volmgr/database/ltidevs
/usr/openv/volmgr/database/volDB
/usr/openv/volmgr/database/rulesDB
/usr/openv/volmgr/database/poolDB
/usr/openv/volmgr/database/robotic_def
/usr/openv/volmgr/database/globDB

/usr/openv/netbackup/db/media
/usr/openv/netbackup/db/image
/usr/openv/netbackup/db/config
/usr/openv/netbackup/db/class
/usr/openv/netbackup/db/client
/usr/openv/netbackup/db/jobs
/usr/openv/netbackup/db/error
/usr/openv/netbackup/db/altnames
/usr/openv/var

I may have missed something...but you get the idea. The mediaDB
(/usr/open/netbackup/db/media/mediaDB) is a NetBackup backup database, while
the (/usr/openv/volmgr/database/volDB) is a NetBackup Media Server database.
I would direct you to Appendix A of the TroubleShooting Guide which presents
a Functional Overview and shows how the databases are related. I've been
teaching NetBackup since version 1.6 and I still direct people to this
functional overview, its really quite good. For those of you that will be
attending Vision this year, I'll be covering some of the database
relationships in my presentation.

can someone give the definitive answer to the
difference between a media db and a catalog db and how
they interact. Thanks
