Speaking of which what is the maintenance process that unassign's tapes.
i.e. is it a command that can be run manually? how often does it run?

I ask because I have expired all images on tape before so that the
tape is no longer assigned however it wasn't removed from the
media servers mediaDB (it came up with a strings).

bpimage will update the image db on the master. this will change the media
server that is requested for restores. it does not add the volume to the
media db on the media server. bpmedia does this.

the master contacts the media servers for maintenance, including the process
to unassign tapes. since you aren't moving these between media dbs and only
updating the image catalog, expect to see assigned tapes down the road that
no
longer have valid images on them. you'll have to use vmquery -deassignbyid
to
unassign these once you verify that there are no valid images on them still
in
the image db and that they are no longer needed.

If the decommisioned media server is not online, bpmedia -movedb will not
work. Try bpimage i.e.

bpimage -newserver <name> [-oldserver <name>] [-id <id>]

Hope this helps
