It is my understanding from your mail that currently you run your backup
over a SAN and your management wants to get it off of the SAN. They must
have a reason for doing so. You'd better get to know the reasoning
before making any conclusions as to what is better seen from the p.o.
view of NetBackup.
Normally SAN would do offload of the backup server, relieve the network
(LAN/WAN), but putting little more load on the clients. In many
situations SAN will therefore be the preferred choice to implement. It
may very well be a reason to leave the SAN architecture for reasons like
outgrowing the SAN or even employing new, over-allocated LAN hardware.
=20
FYI I am involved in an implementation using a dedicated LAN for backup.
It requires a big enough switch (if combined with normal LAN traffic)
for proper VLAN definitions. Of course Gb Ethernet to provide bandwidth.
We use a media server L700 lib and LTO drives. Using two Gb connections
from the server to the LAN we aim at doing 2 TB backups within 6 hours.
At start I was a bit anxious to get the job done and preferred a SAN
solution, but now it seems to work, though not yet at full capacity.
Only 4 Solaris 6800 clients produce the load of the environment...
=20
I hope this will help you making your recommendations to management,
