If you turned on compression as part of the NB class setup, the additional
processors would have to go in the client. It's a client-side compression.
Usually not recommended unless bandwidth is a problem because it chews so
hard on the client's CPU's.
If you turned on compression on the tape drive, it's usually performed in
the drive's hardware and there should be no benefit to adding processors to
your media server.
Your symptoms look like you turned on class compresssion, ie client-side
compression. Compressing at the drive and at the client can be time & space
consuming to no benefit (or worse, actually increase tape usage).

Subject: [Veritas-bu] Multiple processors, compression in NetBackup
In preliminary testing of our new NetBackup configuration, we ran a class
with and without compression. Using compression doubled the time it took
the class to finish.
The class consists of one client, specifying about 34GB of software
installation files and hardware drivers to be backed up. The client is
connected to the media server via TCP/IP ethernet. The media server is a
dual Xeon 333 with 500mb RAM running Windows 2000, connected via fabric SAN
switch to an HP Surestore-E library.
Now for the question: Would adding more processors to the media server
speed up the compression considerably? (or, possibly, is the compression
done at the client?)
If we should add more processors to the media server, are they automatically
detected and used by Netbackup 3.4.1, or is there extra configuration there?
Thanks!
Jesse
