You also have a third option, TapeAlert, if your hardware/software supports it.

Allowing the L40 to clean the drives will ensure the drives are cleaned when
they are dirty and acutally requesting a clean. Unfortunately, when these
drives are being cleaned, Netbackup does not have control of the robotic arm
which may cause backup/restore failues and TLD to go down.

Utilizing Netbackup to clean the drives works just fine, but, you have to
guess as to how many hours to set the clean for. For DLT tapes, I'd suggest
100 hours. If you are running the L40 from UNIX, you can write a script to
watch the /var/adm/messages file for notifications that cleaning carts are
full (or physically look at the tape info through media manager) and perform
eMail notifications...Not sure what file to view with W2k/NT. If you go
this route, I'd suggest setting up appropriate barcode rules for the
cleaning carts.

Good Luck...

With a StorageTek L40 Tape Library, containing DLT8000
drives, running Veritas Netbackup 3.2, is it better to
let the library auto-clean the drives, or set
Netbackup to handle drive cleaning?

Can Netbackup respond to a drives request to be
cleaned? Or will it only clean the drive, based on the
number of hours that the drive was used?
