Yeah, that's how I've done it so far. I was hoping that NB had a
higher-level command.

With tldtest you can scan the inport.
e.g echo "s i" | tldtest -r /dev/sg/c?t?l?

I've got a kludge build around "tldtest" right now but I'm looking for a
better way.
I'd settle for just know how many tapes are in the mailslots at any time.
