You can use the ALLOW_MULTIPLE_RETENTION_PER_MEDIA option in your bp.conf
file to mix backups of different retention levels.

That's IT!

In the past, when i had the same retention times, i was able to backup all
my servers to 3 tapes. I changed the retention times on some scheduals and
not on all the sceduals so this is why it didn't work anymore.

Now all the scheduals have the same retention times.

Thanks Much

Karl

Is that "3" and "6" the retention level? By default, Veritas won't mix
retention levels on media. You can override this in the config if you
want, but it's often a bad idea (one tiny backup with a long retention
could prevent the media manager from reusing a tape where all of the other
images have expired).

Kewl,
Now for my real question ;)
I was doing our monthend tonight. I basically have 2 scripts. One that i
run @about 1:00PM which wrote to media id's
28 8MM TS8 0 16 - 3 22675840 ACTIVE
29 8MM TS8 0 17 - 3 5658464 ACTIVE
Ok, then i ran the 2nd monthend backup @about 7:00pm which wrote to
media
id's
30 8MM TS8 0 18 - 6 4418112 ACTIVE
31 8MM TS8 0 19 - 6 23040704 ACTIVE
The script runs multiple scheduals. but it then gave me no media
availible(error 96) so then i had to add another tape to the media pool
which wrote:
32 8MM TS8 0 20 - 4 10727680 ACTIVE
I'm using Mammoth Tapes. The tape library is an exabyte 210 with 2 tape
drives. My bp.conf is pretty much bare.
Tape ID 30 isn't full, so why didn't netbackup just us tape 30?
Thanks
Karl

You can check how much was used - take a loot at the "available_media"
script that's in the goodies directory.
How much is left could only be an estimate because you don't know what
compression factor you're going to get. It varies widely depending on
the
type of data...you could probably compute an average for your site (or
for
a certain class of backups) and use that as a guesstimate for how much
space is left.
