Thanks so much. A few questions/comments if I may(?):
1. When you speak of dumping from tape, do you mean just catalogs? That's
what I'd like to do (I think)... If that's what I do, will all my
classes/schedules move over? If not, is there a way to pull these over too
(I cringe at the thought of recreating them, but upfront work beats daily
brow-beating!)? Check my logic here: Build out and bring up the new server
with the IP/hostname of the original server; rename/re-ip the old server
making sure no NetBackup services start at reboot; install Veritas NBU w/the
Jumbo 2 patch; copy the catalogs over the network (C:\Program
Files\VERITAS\NetBackup\db, C:\Program Files\VERITAS\NetBackup\database, and
C:\Program Files\VERITAS\NetBackup\var); test; drink beer if successful,
else drink Mountain Dew.
2. Here's what I think the culprit may be: The following patches were
installed in this order:
* NB_341_1 (ran twice, oddly enough!)
* NB_341_PO858
* NB_341_2
* NB_341_PO836
* NB_341_PO896
* NB_341_1 (!! Aha! Ran twice again!)
* NB_341_PO858 (!! again)
* NB_341_2 (!! again)
* NB_341_1 (!! again)
* NB_341_PO858 (!! again)
* NB_341_2 (!! again)
* NB_341_PO836 (!! again)
* NB_341_PO896 (!! again)
Holy moly! That smells like trouble, eh? Further support for rebuilding, I'd
say... Anyone?
3. What do you recommend as far as installing Veritas patches (ie, all
patches as they're released, only jumbo patches, or what...)
4. Do you run with Removable Storage Manager services running? See #5.
5. I'm confused about what driver to load for the Seagate Viper LTO drives
in my library: Seagate's or the Veritas halfinch.sys driver? The installer
for the Veritas drivers mentioned that the halfinch.sys driver is not
compatible with MS Removable Storage Manager...
6. Do you have your system set up to backup the catalog after every session,
or other?
I'm so thankful for this list and your help. My blood pressure just dropped
80 points.

You can follow the usual steps of building a new server and importing the db
tapes.....the other is to use a different backup program. Make sure your
master server is quiescent,ie, not doing any backups and do a full backup of
that system, say with Backup Exec. At any rate build your new box and load
up advanced server. Rules of thumb....250MB memory for every tape drive, 1
gb disk space for every 50gb of data to back up, the suggestion is to mirror
rather than raid 5 but we do raid 5 no problem, dual procs of at least the
800mhz variety. Then dump your backup to the new machine, two very cool
things happen, W2K plug and play adjusts to the new hardware and all the
work you have done thus far will not have to be redone. You might need a few
disk drivers to load in but probably not.
Just FYI...you will need to patch up to 3.4.1_2 one of these days soon. We
run w2k master/media with an stk700 and 6 stk9840 drives, I love this
system.

Subject: [Veritas-bu] NBU Server Rebuild
Howdy all,
New to Netbackup, new to the list! I'm coming into an environment where NBU
3.41 is running on Win2k Advanced Server (ha). This box is having so many
issues (some hardware [raid controller]) and some (I think) software. The
STK L40 robot (dual LTO drives) has gone thru several firmware revs, as have
the LTO drives themselves. Additionally, the catalog size is getting large
enough to cause concern with the server's small available drive size (not to
mention that the data resides on one disk w/no RAID!). I would like to start
with a fresh install on a new box with more HD space in a RAID-5
configuration, where I can keep change control logs from the get go. I've
seen postings indicating that hostname should stay the same, and am prepared
to do so.
Can someone point me to docs or provide info outlining how to accomplish
this? Is it as simple as a NBU 3.41 installation on the new box, and a
recovery of the catalogs off tape?
Many thanks!
