SUMMARY:

Many thanks to all who responded. especially Itzik.

Folks,
Itzik said it all!. The bottom line is , on an L700 (with STK Library code
2.36.00) if you mix different types of Drives, you have to use the proper
barcode for each and every tape and it doesn't recognize any media with out
a barcode, even DLTs. And as Itzik said, I happened to see the "L1" on the
LTO barcode label which designate it to be LTO tape, If I use an DLT barcode
label on LTO tape , it doesn't work. Also I happened to see now it doesn't
even recognize Cleaning tapes which didn't have a barcode label before. Now
I got to order some barcode labels for them too.

Thanks,
Shyam.

Jukeboxes that support mixed media/drives have to have a way to ensure
only the right media gets into the drives.
To enable this, barcodes for the newer media/drives have to have a
specific designation on the barcode.
For LTO cartridges the barcode will be comprised of six alphanumeric
characters suffixed by the characters L1 that designate first version of
LTO.
DLT tapes do not have a designated suffix but SDLT do have one. If you
use DLT barcodes for the LTO cartridges the library will think they are
DLT tapes.
In one occasion when the customer did not have proper barcodes we had to
disable the barcodes usage at the library.
HTH,
        Itzik

I forgot to mention that I was using the LTO tapes without a barcode
label. I tried using one of the DLT barcode label on a LTO tape ,but in
both the cases, it was giving "INCOMPATIBLE MEDIUM" error when I tried
to mount it through the "robtest" utility.

Does any one know if it's possible to use the LTO tapes without a
barcode label ? OR if the barcode labels are a must, then, is there
anything special about the LTO barcode label which specifies the media
type ?

Thanks.......

Subject: [Veritas-bu] Error # 96 with Seagate LTO Drives

Hello Group,

I installed 4 Seagate LTO (SEAGATE ULTRIUM06242-XXX) Drives to an
existing L700 Tape Library , with an existing 4 DLT7000 Drives.

Configured the drives in the Device manager, and created a new Storage
unit for the 4 LTO drives. But, when I try to do a backup using this
new
storage unit, I get Error # 96. Has anyone come across this problem?
Any
solution or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Here is my configuration:

1. I did modify st.conf for the Seagate LTO Drives
2. I can see all the LTO drives using sgscan.
3. Added the drives to the exiting robot with the correct index and
device names. 4. Created a new storage unit with Robot type "TLD" and
density "hcart".
5. Added new LTO tapes with Media type:' 1/2" Cartridge tape' and Robot
type
: "TLD" and the system assigned these tapes into a new volume group. (
I am not sure if the same library can have different Volume group for
different media types ???) 6. Restarted Netbackup server after doing
all the configuration.

Do I miss anything here ?

I am using Netbackup datacenter 3.4 ( with Veritas patch 34_) on
Solaris 2.6.

Thanks,
Shyam
