Tim,

I am interested in what sort of "retries" you were getting before changing
the tcp_?_interval. Were you seeing 174's at all?

We are seeing intermittent 174's and are getting little help from Veritas in
resolving them. We are also seeing the network "pause" for short periods,
where some daemons and functions are returning errors like "network protocol
error" and "unable to connect to vmd". These are hiccups after which
functionality returns and the backups complete on the next try after the
174.

After looking at this Veritas doc and reading your email, I am wondering if
they are releated . . . ?

Thanks!

Scott

On Veritas' site it says lower it to 1 second (1000) but on Sun's site it
says NEVER set this lower than 1 minute (60000).

I set ours to 1 minute and it did help clear up some retries we were having
on a nightly basis.

I just read through this document, and have a question.

One of the tuning items it suggests is lowering the TCP_TIME_WAIT_INTERVAL
(TCP_CLOSE_WAIT_INTERVAL). I am curious why lowering this value would help
the performance of NetBackup? Or why how it would adversly affect the system
by leaving it at the default 4 minute?

Jason
