Thanks for the suggestions regarding my INCOMPATIBLE MEDIUM problems.  I
believe I have found the cause.
The 9840 tapes have a "R" barcode label to indicate their media type.  It
seems we received one bag of five of these tapes which all have the "R"
barcode slightly smudged.  The sumdge is almost undetectable to my eye, but
obviously it is bad enough that the 9710 library cannot read it and doesn't
know what media types the tapes are.
