It is probably the leader in the DLT which is damaged. If you push open the
flap on a DLT and look in you will see what looks like a plastic black
arrow. This is the leader. The leader is what latches onto the DLT tape and
pulls the ribbon into the drive. The leader can get damaged by a bad tape -
it is possible that the leader is damaged and won't let go of your tape. If
you pull the tape gently and then let go and it springs back, then it is the
leader still holding onto the tape - best get an engineer in to replace the
leader.
