I can see how the catalog tapes would be unusable between NT and Unix, but I
am pretty sure that NetBackup formated tapes are completely exchangable
between unix and NT.

Scott,

We converted an NT4.0 master to an HP/UX master. In order to have it
supported, we did it with a Veritas consulting contract. In concept, it is
not hard to do. You move your database to the new server and make sure that
your mediadb, image residence, mediaID residence are all correct.

However, NT writes to the tape in such a way that Unix can't read it. You
really need to keep your NT written media in an NT media server for
restores.

This also goes for the NetBackup catalog. You can't restore an NT catalog
backup to a Unix server. We had to move a 24 GB catalog. We had to create
multiple tar files of 2GB or less (UX limitation), copy those to the UX
server and untar them. A better bet would probably be to install an NFS
product on the NT server, NFS share the catalog, mount it on the Unix
system, and copy the files from the NFS partition to the local partition.

As I said, it was simple in concept. The details can drive you crazy. It
took us about 14 hours to do what we did. There is probably a better way to
do this. If not, there should be.
