If you're already running Windows 2000 then you probably already know about
the System State. System State is supposed to be a "consistent" backup of
system components, including the Registry, that have dependencies. The only
way to pull out individual keys is to do an alternate location restore (which
doesn't include everything, but does include the Registry) and then pull out
what you need from there.

As far as NT 4.0 goes... you can back up the Registry with a "brick level"
type backup. Every key of the Registry is like a file within the NetBackup
catalogs, so plan on adding a lot of data into you're catalogs if you do this
often or on many servers. You just add the HKEYxxx into your file list. For
example, a file list of "ALL_LOCAL_DRIVES" and "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE:\" would
back up all drives, including the files that make up the Registry within
%systemroot%\system32\config, and do a "brick level" style backup of HKLM.

As with Mailbox backups within Exchange, these types of backups of your
Registry should not replace the normal backup... they just make for quicker
and easier restores.

Another method to pull out individual keys without adding the extra overhead
to your catalogs, is to restore the file to an alternate location (ex.
%systemroot%\system32\config\system to c:\temp\system). Then load the
restored file into the Registry as a new hive (notice this says HIVE, as in
creating TEMP under HKLM... do not replace any existing hives). Export the
required keys and values from the temp hive. Then unload the temporary hive.
This actually doesn't take that long. As always, be careful when editing the
Registry, see your NT admin for assistance and don't try this alone if you're
not familiar with the Registry!!

I'm running Netbackup datacenter 3.4 with a Windows 2000 Master servers. I
would
like to be able to restore individual registry keys for NT4 machines.

Example: if necessary I would like to restores the
HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Shares key in the event
that
the shares on a File server get hosed up.

Is it possible to create a class to backup the NT registry separately and
restore it on a per key or hive basis.

Thanks in advance.
