Monica and Diane -

First off - I'm sure you mean 256 MB (megabytes) of RAM, not Kb (kiloBITS),
which would be ridiculous. Secondly, your memory requirements will depend
entirely on how much data you're backing up, whether or not you have tape
drives connected to your master server (a very popular architecture,
especially in smaller environments), and how much bandwidth you have
available to your master server.

We have 4 GB of RAM on an E450, with 2 Gb Ethernet connections, as well as
one FE connection, directly connected to 8 DLT 7000 drives. That RAM is not
excessive - it gets used, and does a fair amount of swapping to boot (which
is approximately 16 times the minimum).

Common sense comes into play - the tape drives and network are going to
consume memory, in addition to the NetBackup DB functionality on the Master
Server, which alone would chew up 256 MB easily. 256 is probably the minimum
required to run the Master Backup software. You have to add more for
everything else you plan on doing. More memory is always better than less,
no matter what. BTW - is this NT or UNIX? Direct attach drives or no?
Robotics?

I just took an eLearning class on Veritas NetBackup and it does
indeed recommend 256Kb of RAM for the Master Server. The education
material suggests more information can be found in Chapter 2 of
the Veritas NetBackup 3.4 Release Notes.
