Actually, I'll answer for Craig.  He _did_ implement that feature, and got 
frustrated at THOSE results.  The problem with automated tape cleaning by 
the STK library is that NBU doesn't know the drive is being cleaned, and it 
tries to put a tape in the drive.  You get weird errors and down'd 
drives.  With 100+ tape drives in his environment, he gave up on that.

So I suggested changing it to the TapeAlert feature (since they're not 
using SSO yet).  Lo and behold this doesn't seem to work very well 
either.  The only real answer left is frequency-based cleaning, which I'm 
not a big fan of, since that's not how DLTs should be cleaned.  However, 
frequency-based cleaning isn't supported in 3.4 SSO.  (And they're looking 
at it.)

There's no good answer to this question, AFAIC.
