Did you initiate the restore from the master server or from the client? My
request still sits there and does nothing. In looking through the BPRD log I
see some messages that indicate the client names did not match, but my
experience with that log is that what you see that you think is a problem,
ain't always the problem. NetBackup works pretty good as long as you don't
deviate from the norm. Otherwise, it can be a pain in the @#$. I'll keep
working on it.

To recap:

On the Novell client I updated the list of client to browse for backups and
added the name of the original Novell server whose data I want to read.

I did not change the actual name of the client on the new server to match the
name of the client whose data I want to restore.

It's almost like it can't connect to the server.

Just adding the old target name will do the trick. I thought it kind of
strange myself considering I never had to do it under 3.11 but I guess
someone fixed a bug somewhere that led to this behavior. At least they have
a workaround clumsy though it may be.

So ...

I have to update the configuration on the new temporary server to include
the name of the client whose data I want to use as source for the restore?
Man, this is confusing. You definitely have to have a score card for this
one. Thanks for the input. I'll give it a try.

Dennis

You will also (as of 3.2) add the original target name to the new server to
do an alternate path restore. I found this out after upgrading from 3.11
which didn't require it.

PS. Remember to delete the original target name from a server or you will
back it up twice! Once directly and once through your new server (assuming
that the original target is still online). I accidently was backing up 80
gig on a server with 30 gig of space for a couple of days.

I apparently sent this to the wrong address. If you've seen this before,
please excuse the second posting.

I've been having some issues with restoring to an alternate client for both
NT and NetWare.

The most recent case involves the need to restore the files that were backed
up from an existing NetWare server (Server A) to a temporary NetWare server
that has never been known by NetBackup (Server B). I was reading something
in the doc that says that I have to make Server B known to NetBackup by
adding it as a client. I've done that but the restore job appears to hang up
and die without ever having mounted a single tape. I see things in the doc
about the altnames directory and the No.Restrictions directory but still
have no idea if these apply to my situation or not. I have similar issues
when trying to restore data from an NT server being backup by NBU to a new
NT server that NBU does not know.

Any information or guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Dennis
