Everything was smooth sailing here with our 2 STK 9710's. We started having
problems to the point where we lost multiple drives each week (and sometimes
each day).

Some things we did to resolve:

1) Put a previous version of microcode on all drives (and make it uniform
for all).
2) Audited the entire library of tapes for bad directories (storagetec did
this for us)
3) Changed robot to do autoclear of the drives (and removed this function
from Veritas control)

Lee,

We haven't had this problem for a three months or so since
we've got STK libraries. Now I think the tape drives
are getting dirty and some of them were used more than 600 hours
We have 3 STK L700 and have the problem on all of them, more or
less, mostly on the library which is usign 3-4 years old tapes.
For the last weekend we lost 5 tape drives in two libraries,
it's too much.
It also depends on loading of you robots. If you have
enough tape drives to run backups without jobs queuning and waiting
for an available tape drive - you will never have this
problem.
I got responses from 3 different people who has the same
problem and working on fixing the problem with Veritas and StorageTek.
( the same as we do )

Thanks,
Andrew
