Yes, that's always been my understanding, too. The only thing that will
prevent NetWorker from automatically recycling a tape is any of the
following, not that one should rely on just one choice, of course:
1. Don't put the tape in the library (duh!)
2. Physically write-protect the tape
3. Set the recycle policy to manual
4. Change the retention time for all the save sets to 'forever' or
whatever that trick is.
To answer Stan's question: The reason that I want to mark it full is
because then I won't be fooled into loading it back into the library
falsely thinking that it still has space left on it. I know it doesn't.
I don't recall the specifics, but I think I originally marked it
read-only so I wouldn't purposely overwrite it for a while. After that
time, I decided to recycle it, but for whatever reasons I decided to
change the mode first. Then, before I recycled it, I remembered why I'd
set it to read-only, and why I never wanted to write to it again, so I
didn't end up recycling it after all. Now, in addition to items 1-3
above, I want to reset its '%used' value back to full.
I suspect that I could load it in a drive, make sure no other available
pool tapes are loaded in any other drives, and run a small backup to
that tape's pool. NetWorker should use that volume first since it's
nearline, and it thinks its appendable (100% used), but once it realizes
it's not, it will most likely change it to 'full', and then load another
appendable tape and run the backup, which I could cancel, or just pick a
tiny one and let it finish.
Obviously, Tim's suggestion of using 'nsrmm' obviates the need to do
those shenanigans, however. But I always seem to forget about our friend
'nsrmm'!

Just curious, but why would you care if a tape at 100% of the estimated
capacity is marked full or not? If you want to prevent a piece of tape
media from being written to, you can always mark it as read only in NMC.
To Stan :
AFAIK, if you put a tape in 'read-only' mode, this tape will never be
written unless you don't remove manually this status.
Putting a tape in 'full' mode prevents it to be written, but permits this
tape to be automatically recycled after having passed the retention time.
