I doubt that anybody ever did that. However, except for the update enablers, i 
do not remember a general technical problem. 

In general, you have the choice:
  - either you upgrade in multiple steps or
  - you update directly risking that you might need to go back (by recovering a 
bootstrap) and then do it step by step.
