Hi brerrabbit
Thanks for your email, which provides a great forum to update you and other EDL
- embedded storage node users on this issue.
EMC's plans regarding support for newer versions of NetWorker embedded in older
versions of EMC Disk Library have matured. Going forward, EMC plans to support
newer versions of NetWorker embedded in currently-supported releases of EMC
Disk Library. EMC will perform testing to insure interoperability over the
coming months. As new combinations are tested, the EMC Support Matrix
(http://www.emc.com/products/interoperability/index.htm).
If you need support for a combination that is not yet listed in the ESM, work
through your sales channel to submit a RPQ with your requirements.
"I mean, for crying out loud, all the cloning is doing is mounting tapes and
copying data, exactly what in the 3.1 code is incompatible?"
Excellent question. When we do the testing, we would expect that no problems
will be found, given the long history of embedding NetWorker in the EDL.

Subject: [Networker] EMC DL740 incompatibility with Networker 7.5+
Greetings
Other folks may have already caught this, but I wanted to pass along something
we've turned up because its not as obvious as I think it ought to be.
We're on the downhill side of our upgrade to 7.5 from 7.4 (or we were), but
we've turned up a disturbing incompatibility with our EMC DL740s. We use the
embedded storage node in these units to handle our cloning to tape, and for the
most part we've been happy with their operations.
Networker 7.5 will support EMC Disk Libraries running the 3.2 code and higher,
but the DL740 model cannot be upgraded past the 3.1 code family. Ergo, 7.4 is
the last version of Networker that is supported with the DL740.
Even though the DL740 is supported until 2012, you can't use the embedded
storage node past September when primary support for NE 7.4 ends. I'm getting
confirmation that the VTL portion of the gear is supported, but we're going to
have to either buy an extended support agreement and put off our upgrade or
re-design how we clone.
:x
It's especially unsettling because the documentation states part of this
information in a couple of places (the procedure generator is one), but nowhere
does it connect the dots and say "this gear won't work with 7.5".
It's still early in the process and EMC may come back and pull off something
wonderful - but there are times when I wonder if ANYONE there really
understands how the embedded storage nodes and Networker work together. I
mean, for crying out loud, all the cloning is doing is mounting tapes and
copying data, exactly what in the 3.1 code is incompatible?
Hopefully someone will find this information useful, even if you're not running
the 740 model, if you're relying on the DL embedded storage node for cloning,
you should make a point to factor in the NW support for the engine code level
when you look at your capital budgets.
