Hi Johannes,

I was hoping some users would jump in on this but here's a little info
from my perspective. EMC Engineering is currently using HomeBase to
protect roughly 400 servers (and growing). The HomeBase client software
is integrated with NetWorker starting with 7.4 SP3. If you bring in a
HomeBase server, it does profiling and protection for server identity type
info. NetWorker (and Avamar too) provides protection for the user and
application data. You can set the HomeBase profile to be generated as a
part of a NetWorker backup job schedule. The profiles HomeBase creates
and stores are pretty small in size and this is seen as an advantage over
image-based BMR products as images tend to get quite large and it can be
prohibitive to create them daily. HomeBase can also provide dissimilar
hardware bare-metal recovery which is important because if a total server
replacement is necessary, usually the new box is a bit different (bigger,
stronger, faster).

It would be interesting to hear about your BMR-type requirements. How many
servers would you look to protect this way? What version of NetWorker are
you using?
