VSS vs. ASR is actually more of an MS Windows thing than NW, and of
course, the MS docs are not all that great for us mere
Unix/VMware-mortals either ... :\
Here's some links about the differences, as well as links back to the
archives about it re: networker etc -
http://www.google.com/search?q=VSS+VS+ASR
The messages you see about the "inactive files" are normal, I see those
all the time either way, although I am unable to explain them
personally... I assume they have to do with files changed vs. unchanged
over time etc ..
You should have seen the "D:\" saveset back up the same either way ,
VSS-enabled or not, although I'm not sure what version(s) of windows
server you are attempting to backup - For example, from a full 2003 R2
STD VSS-enabled backup of a D:\ volume last night -
testjbur-vm.norwich.edu: D:\ level=full, 17 GB 01:38:10 60978
files
Are you trying to exclude the entire D:\ volume from your backup(s), or
just get rid of VSS messages in emails/logs? (Sorry I'm not sure what
you are trying to accomplish overall?)
The other thing to be aware of about VSS is that all Win 2008 / Windows
7, and any future versions of MS Windows require VSS for
backup/recovery.
cheers,
Jamie
