The future of MS application backups is NMM, but to be fair, it's because
Microsoft has mandated that all of their applications will leverage VSS in the
future.  I also strongly prefer the existing agents, I dread the prospect of
shifting to NMM when the Exchange module is no longer supported, and I know at
some point we'll have to cut over to it to do Sharepoint too (currently we use
the native Avamar agent).  The good news is that I think that the Networker
folks know that NMM is ... err ... crud ... right now.  Based on some posts
over at the Networker Community site at EMC, they've point blank acknowledged
that it is too complicated to set up and that running it is hard.  Hopefully
that will translate into a much stronger product...and they have to do that,
how can they hope to compete in the Enterprise market space if they can't make
the agent that backs up all things Microsoft work well?

Back to Sharepoint - EMC hosted some webcasts recently about Sharepoint, one of
which was specifically about backups and DR.  They were recorded, if you click
on the "register" link here:

http://info.emc.com/mk/get/DBM6473-4100_raf_lp?reg_src=IN

you can access the recordings.  Several things were noteworthy, they covered
backups at different scales, what can be recovered (and what can't) when doing
backups of the databases versus backups with an agent.   They also mentioned
Kroll Ontrack Tools as a utility suite to get additional granularity.
