My M.O. is to use it only for recovering old savesets. However, I can't
mount the tape with the savesets on it, unless I add that tape drive to
the pool. So, effectively, I have to add that drive to every pool I wish
to recover savesets from, else I can't mount the tape. :-)

We were specifically told otherwise, by an EMC rep.

It's not a jukebox, just a standalone drive. And I was able to start a
recover job from it. Until it started complaining about not being able to
decode a block from the tape ... Dunno why it's have a blocksize issue; we
never changed the deafult Windows blocksize on the old SDLT-600 drive that
made this tape, nor changed it on this new standalone drive we are trying
to restore from.

I think I will do that, thanks.
