Craig,
Our server is Solaris 10, and we are running Networker version 7.4.4. I
set our server to use oldauth months ago. In our case, the 2GB chunking
problem only started recently when we began deploying the 7.4 SP5 client
software.
So In our case, using oldauth did not stop the 2GB chunking. But it did
resolve an issue we had where client backups would do nothing for the
first 5 minutes after a group was started, then the backup would finally
start and run normally. We also saw this 5 minute delay when using the
savegrp -p command.

After a lot of thrashing, I was able to get an EMC engineer on the
phone. He told me something I haven't seen mentioned in this
group. If you have backups being broken up into 2GB chunks, THEY
WILL NOT BE RECOVERABLE!
Is this true only in recent versions (i.e., 7.4x +)? We're going to
upgrade our production environment (probably to 7.5.x) early next
year -- we're still on 7.2 there -- and while *all* of our Netware
clients chunk, I've never in almost 10 years experienced a single
restore failure as a result of that, AFAIK.
Len,
I've seen the 2GB chunks in 7.1 and 7.2 on clients running old
versions of Netware and Windows NT as well. This was normal behavior
for these OS's, because they did not support files larger than 2GB.
So you should be fine seeing this in 7.2 with an older version of
Netware.
And related to my recent post, I just had another conversation with
EMC, and the are telling me that the data from the 2GB chunking
issue in 7.4 *can* be recovered, but only after fixing the issue on
the server first. Apparently the server fix also has some code to
manage the chunked savesets. So if your system is 2GB chunking with
7.4 or newer, it will take a bit of work before these savesets can
be read.
The fix is LGTsc31925.
It is included in cumulative/roll-up 7.5.1.6 and 7.4.5.2. I know for a
fact that 7.5.1.5 prevents new continuation savesets from being
generated - i.e., prevents chunking; LGTsc31925 can also be requested
for a bunch of other official and cumulative patch clusters as well.
(I recently got it for 7.5.1.5 for Windows 64-bit, and know it was
also available for Windows 32-bit for that release.)
Note that sites that are on 7.5.1 should, instead of getting 7.5.1.6,
request 7.5.1.5 plus a port of LGTsc31925 to their platform/OS, due to
some issues with 7.5.1.6's NMC starting in upgrade scenarios. (Due to
be fixed soon/there's a workaround, but I can't remember it off-hand.)
Cheers,
Preston.
