In regard to: Re: [Networker] Make Expired Volumes Browseable, Gold, Evan...:
Can someone explain to me the difference between "scanner -i" vs "nsrck -L7" ?
The difference is really "hours and hours" vs. "minutes".
I've posted on this topic many times in the past, as have others, search
the archives for nsrck -L7 to find some of the previous discussion.
nsrck -L7 should always be what you try first. The man page for "scanner"
even says that specifically in the discussion of the "-i" option.
scanner is your "last resort". If you know the exact path of the file(s)
or folder(s) you need, even a restricted saveset recovery is a faster
option than scanner.
Basically, IF your tapes have an index saveset for the client(s) in
question, you use nsrck -L7 to very quickly load that index saveset
from tape and merge it into your online index. Within just a few minutes,
you can again browse.
If you don't have any index saveset for the client(s) in question
and you don't know the exact paths to the files/folders you need to
recover, you use scanner to read the actual contents of the saveset(s).
It builds new index entries (again, merging) from what it finds inside
the savesets.
