Hi Tim,

How do you do this if it is only a single (clone) instance?

In particular if you have cloned to tape, and
now want to purge the disk.

You can still do this for a single ssid/cloneid combo - i.e,

nsrmm -w now -e now -S ssid/cloneid

will work.

This issue appears to not be present in 7.5, though it is in 7.5.1.

The other thing you have to bear in mind is that if NetWorker detects this scenario it _may_ set the "scan needed" flag; this is currently an undocumented option in nsrmm - I've got a documentation bug request in about that, too.

The "scan needed" flag, once set on a volume, disallows space reclamation. If you encounter it, you can either:

(a) Unmount the volume(s) (and RO volumes) and scan

or

(b) If you're absolutely certain, run:

nsrmm -o notscan Volume

Any significant updates I see on this I append to my blog entry on the topic -

Hi everyone,

Just a heads up about a new feature I've discovered in NetWorker 7.5.x that may affect you if you're using disk backup units.

A lot of administrators when using disk backup units will periodically use nsrmm to delete savesets from the disk backup unit under certain circumstances - e.g., a big manual job that wasn't needed, a failed full that's going to be re-run, etc.

Usually the procedure has been:

nsrmm -d -S ssid
nsrim -X

or

nsrmm -d -S ssid
nsrstage -C -V volume

This *does not work* any more in 7.5.1. (Not sure about 7.5. Not going to test, either.)

Instead, when it comes to the purge operation, NetWorker reports that it's been unable to reclaim space from the disk backup unit because it's been unable to find details about the deleted saveset(s).

As a workaround, you can instead do the following:

nsrmm -w now -e now -S ssid
nsrim -X

This will mark the saveset as immediately recyclable and then the subsequent nsrim will trigger safe disk cleanup.

Cheers,

Preston.
