Yeah I would expect something be documented on the powerlink KB search, but
it's pretty close to nothing. It's mentioned, but not explained.

Does anyone know how this NSR_KEEP_ALIVE environment variable works?

This is a system environment variable, which is set up on Windows the same
way other environment variables are set. On Windows, it is set in the system
control panel. The specific value to set it to depends on the timeout
setting on your firewall, so talk with your firewall administrator to
discuss an appropriate value for this variable. Also, if you search
PowerLink for the name of this environment variable, you will find detailed
information on it.
