Ben,
You can overcome this problem by using a filesystem that can be
dynamically expanded. Such as OnlineJFS for HP-UX, VFS on Sun, and linux
LVM you can do online filesystem resizing. Windows you can do it with a
dynamimc drive.

What you can do and I do this. Is possibly do a 2 factor stage before it
goes to tape.

1st - You do your backup to the adv_file
2nd - Have your watermark set low enough to move it to another adv_file
device that has sufficent space before it is cloned to tape.

Or

Put a file system monitor in place to alert you when the space gets 90%
full. That way you can take manual action.

I don't think emc is going to change the way adv_file works. They will
probably recommend a combination of items.
