Good Morning,

You are not on the wrong path. We backup directly to CDLs (Full once a week
with daily Differentials). We clone all backups to tape Mon-Fri. Our onsite
pool retention is the same as our offsite retention (Full - 3 months, Daily
Differential - 14 days). Our taped clones are not for "Operational Restores",
but for disaster recovery. The onsite CDL copies are for Operational Restore.

Not knowing the size of your library, the amount of data you backup on a daily
basis, or your RPO/RTOs, it's hard to determine what the "correct" data
retention policy is.
