I have got a new quote for an enhanced support from EMC , but i
would like to know what can possibly go wrong with the software
itself.
Seems like it doesn't include much more then their online support .
Any suggestions ?
Has anyone experienced any problems where EMC support would be
better to have ?
I'll answer with a question. What happens if you let support lapse,
but then have an issue that makes it difficult to recover? Having
backup software without a support contract is somewhat akin to doing
backups but not cloning/duplicating them - while it may work in most
instances, if you have a situation where bad things happen, then
without that added protection you're going to have lost data.
Every software product has bugs, but that's only one aspect of why you
would take out a support+maintenance contract. For a start, by
renewing your support you're entitled to upgrades of the product,
which means as newer functionality comes out you can update to take
advantage of those features. In the event that something in your
environment does trigger/tickle a bug in NetWorker, you can request a
patch. Most importantly though, if your environment encounters a
problem that you can't solve just by Googling or referring to this
list, you have the option of logging a case and getting assistance.
Renewing support on such a critical piece of software is ... well,
critical.
Cheers,
Preston.
