No you don't need the vcb server to see any tape/vtl - you just need NW
to see it listed/installed as a storage node. NW will use the lan in
this case as I noted from Fazil's comments in a prior post..

Yes, but only the exported vm files are backed up to nw, not the vcb
server itself (we don't' backup the vcb server at all actually)....

To restore vcb's, afaik, it's still a two-step process  - restore the vm
files from NW to network share/local disk, then use vmware converter to
import back to esx. Very handy for testing/restoring files even with
full image backups, as you can bring the vm into a separate vswitch/vlan
and fully test it recovery-wise, but can also be bad if you are in a
time crunch and the vm is large, as the converter always uses the LAN
afaik... :(
