Hello,
The opinions are wide ranging, however, if there is high IO ( Which it
will be) requirement to backup VMIMAGES, VCB needs to be robust physical
server, this server should ideally be Storage node for Networker so that
data flowing to the tapes from SN ( VCB Proxy server) is lan free.
Among other justifications, consider, why you would use storage node vs
going over lan for huge datastores, same is true for VMDK
 ( VMIMAGE) backups.
In my mind, vertulized server for VCB is going in wrong direction.

VCB & Networker

VCB needs to be a physical server. I installed and configured on my
networker server and now I'm having problems with my autochanger. Don't
know if it's related but I'm having inventory problems and waiting for a
writable tape error.

My question is does the VCB proxy have to reside on the networker server
or can it be any physical server?

apparently missed the 'NW server on same SAN' part. At that point I'd be
more inclined to make one of the various VMWare servers (perhaps the
secondary VirtualCenter system) a storage node and use that to service VM
backups.
