At the start of the mysql script there is a reference to ". 
/lib/lsb/init-functions" 

I assume the log_daemon_msg is a function in this library that sends output to 
the console.  The only reference to logger in the mysql init script is 
ERR_LOGGER="logger -p daemon.err -t /etc/init.d/mysql -i"

I don't think that is causing the output.  Perhaps I need to recreate a 
separate init script for mysql that I use with savepnpc pre/post processing 
commands.  

I tried stopping syslog all together, and the messages were still displayed.  
Hmmm...
