Stan you remind me of something that happened with an old version of the MS
Exchange BSM several years ago. I think you are absolutely right in having the
systems managers themselves test recoveries, and perhaps additional quarterly
tests aren't a bad idea for DR testing either.
The item I'm referring to is that the Exchange BSM a few years back was
"upgraded" only to find out after a full machine failure that due to a bug in
the new BSM, not all files were being backed up. *Most* of them were, and the
ones that weren't backed up didn't leave us in trouble as we were able to get
the files/data from elsewhere, but it pointed out to us that a full DR really
should be tested. Even though we had successfully tested recovering an Exchange
Store, a proper DR of the server wasn't possible with the backup the BSM made.
In that sense, I'd also recommend that you have supported versions of the
networker client, and of the networker BSMs as well. (i.e. a standards list of
software that your group and the appropriate application groups have fully
tested for DR.)
I would personally recommend incorporating upgrading clients and BSMs into your
quarterly tests as well. -if you don't already do that on a more frequent basis.

You do restores for systems that you don't manage? Interesting. What
we do here is require each system manager to know how to restore data
and we encourage them to test restores at least quarterly.
