Does anyone know if you can have a 7.3 Storage node with a 7.2.2 backup
server?

Absolutely not. It is best practice to keep server and storage node on the same version, although you will be able to get away with some differences. However the 7.2 / 7.3+ boundary is critical, and you should never mix storage nodes and servers between these versions.
