We've just had a very annoying issue which has taken a couple of weeks to
sort out that I thought I'd share in case other people come across it as I
could find no trace of it on the Web.

Backups were hanging on certain Windows boxes from a certain date. We had
the network switches, the network settings and the clients all checked,
but nothing obviously wrong was found. Windows patches were applied to
some boxes the day before the fault started, but on others the same
patches were applied the day after. Not only did backups hang, but there
were many (i.e. one for each attempted save set) save.exe processes
running on the clients that couldn't be killed.

The clients were all Windows 2003 SP1 and had a mix of NetWorker 7.1.2 and
7.13 with OFM 9.2 and 9.4. EMC support were, well, we all know what EMC
support are like!

It turns out that there is a rolling deadlock within Symantec Antivirus
which is known to cause an issue with Open File Manager versions below 9.6.

After the nice chap called Drew at St Bernard Software told me that, it
was a simple case of upgrading OFM and the fault has magically disappeared.
